No More Moth Holes
Clothes moths can cause a lot of damage to your favourite clothes, and can be difficult to get rid of. It’s the larvae that do the damage, as they eat their way to maturity on your best woollens.
The trick is to stop the moths from laying their eggs on the things you want to protect in the first place. No eggs means no larvae hatching out to cause the damage.
The key to success is to be extremely thorough.
Step 1
The larvae of clothes moths are most commonly found in clothes and carpets. The first step is to wash your clothes on a hot wash above 120F (50C), this will kill all stages of insect life. Clothes that can not stand a hot wash may be dry-cleaned or wrapped in a plastic bag and placed in the freezer as sub zero temperatures also kill the moths.
Step 2
At the end of the winter season bag your clean clothes in sealed moth-proof bags. Moths prefer clothes that have been worn and contain traces of skin etc so it’s very important to clean clothes before bagging them.
Step 3
Hang or place the moth repellent bags in wardrobes, drawers, suitcases etc. One bag is required per enclosed space. Refresh the bags with the essential oil top up bottle every 3-4 weeks. We find the smell of the essential oils added to the bag pleasant but moths hate it and cannot choose that area to lay their eggs.
You can also sprinkle the essential oil mixture around the edge of carpets and rugs – moths tend to only like 100% natural fibres so concentrate on those fabrics. Pay attention to any areas that are covered or hidden, as moths like dark places to lay their eggs.
